1.ca.08 JOVES BROCÀNTERS.

1.ca.08 JOVES BROCANTERS.

1.en.12 Walk in the Old City: The Cathedral

On Thursday, weather permitting, we shall go for a walk in the old town. If it rains, we’ll have to cancel the walk. If this happens, we ‘ll be able to go on a virtual walk  using this interactive map, which is part of a great site: Gothic Palma.  This site will also be helpful to complete the information of the dossier after the outing.

YOKO ONO AND PAUL McCARTNEY MAKE PEACE

Finally, 43 years after they broke up, undisputed peace has broken out in the Beatles‘ camp. Last year, Paul McCartney admitted the band’s split had not been the fault of Yoko Ono, who married John Lennon in 1969. Now Ono has said she is “thankful” for McCartney’s words.

In an interview with the Times, Ono said of McCartney’s admission: “I was very, very thankful. I mean I was shocked. I thought, ‘Now you are saying it? Now, after 40 years? But it was very good. In the atmosphere that the world created for us, it was not easy for him to say something like that.”

Nevertheless, she said the hatred directed at her in the wake of the Beatles’ break-up had been a crucial factor in her development as an artist in the subsequent years. “I’m starting to understand something interesting,” she said. “If all those people hadn’t bashed me, what would I be doing now? What I am now was made by all those terrible incidents. I thought it was terrible all those years, but when I think about it now, I realise it was a blessing.”

It seems impossible to keep the Beatles out of the news. McCartney has just released his latest solo album, New, and the Beatles themselves are likely to chalk up yet another No 1 album when the second volume of their BBC sessions is released on 11 November. For those who prefer something quieter, Ringo Starr has put together a picture book for small children based on the lyrics of Octopus’s Garden.

1.en.11 Visit to Es Baluard and Santa Catalina neighbourhood

Next week, Tuesday the 5th of November, we shall visit Es Baluard and St Catalina neighbourhood. Es Baluard is a good example of an old building which has been recovered and given a new use. The name itself, Es Baluard, gives you a hint of its old function. Nowadays it has been transformed into a museum. A dossier will be given to you to take notes and carry our some observation activities. You will be working in groups. Julián has made the groups in 1esoE and Bernat in 1esoD. Next Thursday, in our outing to the Cathedral  and the old town, groups and group leaders will be the same.

Visiting a museum on line can not substitute a first hand experience. Virtual reality is not  the same as real life. However, the web site of Es Baluard is a good option to revisit  it  (visit it again in a virtual way) and get information about what we shall see tomorrow (artists names, description of artwork and so on. You can also visit it to find out coming events. Here you have the link.  I’m sure you all understand what “current” means, don’t you?

Before visiting the museum, we shall go for a walk in Santa Catalina. Santa Catalina is one of Palma’s neighbourhoods. Last week we went up to the tower and observed the views. Santa Catalina is situated towards the West. Look at this map and check its position. In this map you can see the faint white line that circles the old historic city (inside the city walls). The historic city has grown and different neighbourhoods have developed surrounding the old city.

1.en.10 Up and Down the stairs: Changing habits

With Núria, your art teacher,  you are working on Escher paintings, aren’t you? So you must be familiar with Escher’s stairs, which seem to take you nowhere. Imaginary buildings where  people  go up and down aimlessly.

Captura de pantalla 2013-10-27 a la(s) 1.53.55 PM

Last week, we went on a school tour. As people in Escher’s paintings we went up and down endless  stairs. The central stairway in our school is really beautiful, isn’t it? You had also the chance to go even further,  all the way to the tower.  The reward for so much exercise was a nice view from the top, wasn’t it? How many steps did you count?

In our school there is a Captura de pantalla 2013-10-27 a la(s) 1.34.18 PMlift. It was built a few years ago to be used by disabled people, for instance, people in  Captura de pantalla 2013-10-27 a la(s) 1.01.49 PMwheel chairs  or people with a broken a leg who have to use crutches We also have some ramps, to facilitate access to classrooms

Most students and teachers use the stairs. Going up the stairs keeps you fit and it is good for your health. If you could use a lift or an escalator, would you go up the stairs? Most of us probably wouldn’t.

In cities you can also find stairs, ramps and oftenCaptura de pantalla 2013-10-27 a la(s) 1.26.32 PM escalators, moving staircase devices for carrying people between floors of a building.

Next week we shall go on a city walk. You will observe Palma with new eyes.

  • Is our city adapted for disabled people?
  • Are there lots of stairs?
  • Are there  ramps to facilitate access to people with disabilities?

Can we change our habits by looking at things from a different perspective?

Stockholm, a beautiful city with a modern underground system they did an experiment to encourage people going up the stairs instead of choosing the escalator.

Can we change our habits  by making them fun? What the video an write a comment on your notebook

on Monday we’ll go on a walk in the city and one of your tasks will be  to find ways to improve city life.

What do you think of this idea?  Do you believe the  theory of fun might work?
